Ballet. 2 acts, 3 scenes. Music by Tchaikovsky. The libretto was adapted by Marius Petipa from E. T. A. Hoffmann's The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Choreography by Lev Ivanov. It premiered on December 6, 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. On Christmas night, a grand feast is held at the house of a young girl named Clara, and her godfather gives her a Nutcracker. After the feast, Clara dreams that the Nutcracker is fighting an army of mice. The Nutcracker suddenly transforms into a prince and takes Clara to various lands. In the Land of Sweets, the Sugar Plum Fairy dances a pas de deux to welcome her, and divertissement unfolds one after another. There are many revisions of this ballet, but the Bolshoi Theatre's version by Grigorovich is popular in Japan. Ballet companies around the world often put on Christmas-themed performances in December. The dance suite of the same name that is familiar today ((1) Miniature Overture, (2) March, (3) Sugar Candy Dance, (4) Trepak, (5) Arabian Dance, (6) Chinese Dance, (7) Reed Flute Dance, and (8) Waltz of the Flowers) was composed by Tchaikovsky himself and premiered at his concert on March 15, 1892, prior to the premiere of the ballet.
