A specimen that is used as a standard when giving a scientific name to a biological taxonomic group. It is also called a type specimen. For species and taxa of a lower level, a specific specimen is described and given a scientific name as a type specimen (type series for animals), and a scientific name is given to any specimen by determining whether it belongs to the same taxonomic group. For taxa larger than species, one of the lower classifications is determined as the type. This is called the type method, and is the procedure adopted in the nomenclature code.
