A fishing village in the west of Mihama Town, west of Wakayama Prefecture. Former village name. In 1954 it merged with two neighboring villages to form Mihama Town. The area is also commonly known as America-mura (American Village) because many people emigrated overseas and many Western-style houses were built by those who returned. In 1887, Kuno Gihei traveled to Canada, engaged in salmon fishing, and invited villagers to come over. The number of travelers increased, and even a village called Canada Mio-mura was established in Stibston on the Pacific coast of Canada. Many of the emigrants returned to Japan in their old age, and the customs and practices are different from those of other fishing villages.
