Year of death: August 7, 1925 Year of birth: 14th November 1860 (5th February 1860) Journalist and thinker of the Meiji period. His real name was Ikutada. He was born in Edo. His father was Matasuke, a cavalry commander for the shogunate, and his mother was Aiko. Due to the chaos of the Meiji Restoration, he was unable to receive a formal education, learning archery and horse riding from his father, Chinese classics from his mother, and English from an American missionary, as well as studying law and philosophy on his own. In 1879, he passed the examination to become a licensed lawyer. In 1882, he became an editorial and translator for the Toyo Shimpo. In 1897, he moved to Yorozu Chosho, and later served as editor-in-chief for the Nagano Nichi Nichi Shimbun, Hakodate Mainichi Shimbun, Nagano Shimpo, and Tokyo Mainichi Shimbun. He was also well versed in the philosophy of Nietzsche and others, and was known as a free thinker and rationalist.
