A type of kasen (immortal poetry selection), in which 100 excellent poets (kasen) are selected, one poem from each, for a total of 100 excellent poems (immortal poetry). Usually, the name refers to the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, but it also refers to the similarly formatted works called "Ishu Hyakunin Isshu" and "Hyakunin Isshu." [Teruhiko Komachiya] Ogura Hyakunin IsshuThe Ogura Hyakunin Isshu was created by Fujiwara no Teika, who selected one excellent poem from each of the 100 poets, following the example of Fujiwara no Kinto's Thirty-six Immortal Poets' Thirty-six Immortal Poets, and Emperor Gotoba's Jidai Futo Utaawase, which arranged the best poems of 100 poets in the form of a poetry contest. In the entry for May 27, 1235, in Teika's diary Meigetsuki, it is written that Teika was asked by Utsunomiya Yoritsuna (Rensho), father-in-law of his son Tameie, to paste the poems on the shoji screens of his Sagachuin mountain villa, and that he had received a letter from Emperor Tenchi, Fujiwara no Ietaka, Fujiwara no Hibiki, and others. An article about how Tokugawa Teika wrote poems by poets up to Emperor Asuka Masatsune on shikishi paper and sent them to him is said to be closely related to the creation of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, and there are two theories about it: one is that it indicates the creation of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu itself, and the other is that it refers to the Hyakunin Shuka, which is said to be a draft version of the original (it has 97 poems in common with the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, but does not include the poems of Emperor Gotoba and Emperor Juntoku). It is also said that the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu is also called "Ogura Sansou shikishi waka" (Poems on Ogura Sansou shikishi) because Teika wrote them himself for Saga-Ogura Sansou after he had written them for Yoritsuna. There is also a theory that the last two poems, those of Emperor Gotoba and Emperor Juntoku, were later revised by Tameie. The Ogura Hyakunin Isshu is a collection of excellent poems by poets from the Nara period through to the early Kamakura period, with a focus on poets from the Heian period, and includes poems from imperial anthologies ranging from the Kokinshu to the Shokugosenshu. In terms of content, the overwhelming majority of the poems are love poems (43 poems), and there are 32 poems about the four seasons, of which autumn is the most common with 16, and there are also a fair number of miscellaneous poems (20 poems, including one poem titled Zoaki). The poems selected include those that are elegant, sentimental, and dramatic. The composers were 79 men (including 13 monks) and 21 women, which reflects the heyday of women's literature in some ways. The excellent poems, arranged in roughly chronological order, seem to offer a glimpse into the quintessence of the history of imperial waka poetry, and throughout them one can see the prototypes of the Japanese sense of nature and the seasons, their aesthetic sense, and their delicate and sophisticated expressive techniques and linguistic sense. The Ogura Hyakunin Isshu was widely enjoyed as a representative work of classical literature, and was first passed down as the secret teachings of waka poetry to the Nijo family. Numerous commentaries were written, such as the Oei-sho and Sogi-sho. Even in the early modern period, many full-scale commentaries were written, such as Kitamura Kigin's Hyakunin Isshu Shusui-sho, Keichu's Hyakunin Isshu Kaikan-sho, Kamo Mabuchi's Uimanabi, and Kagawa Kageki's Hyakushu Iken. Furthermore, from the mid-Edo period, it became popular as an introductory text to the classics, especially for women, and was published in large volumes bound together with illustrated annotations and practical books for women, along with "The Tale of Genji: Poems in Each Volume (The Genji Incense Picture)" and "The Thirty-six Immortal Poets." Meanwhile, among the popular games of the time, such as karuta and illustrated sugoroku, "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu Karuta" was also created. There were also many "different Hyakunin Isshu" such as Yoshihisa Ashikaga's "Shin Hyakunin Isshu", "Gosen Hyakunin Isshu" which was based on Yoshimoto Nijō, "Buke Hyakunin Isshu" and "Nyobo Hyakunin Isshu" by Tadatsugu Sakakibara, "Genji Hyakunin Isshu" by Okinamaro Kurosawa, "Kokinshu Hyakunin Isshu (Kokin Wakashu One Poem Selection)" by Moriaki Omori, and even in modern times, "Taizen Meiji Shin Hyakunin Isshu" and "Aikoku Hyakunin Isshu". There were also many parodies such as Yusoan's "Inu Hyakunin Isshu" and Nanpo Ota's "Kyōka Hyakunin Isshu". Today, in addition to being used as a classical textbook, the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu has become popular as a karuta card for home play, and there are various ways to play it, such as scatter-picking, Genpei-Gassen, and Bozu-mekuri, and it is also widely played as a competitive karuta game. The poems are selected from 100 poets, and are arranged in almost chronological order. The contents are mostly love poets, with many intelligent and technical songs that use kaken and affinity words, reflecting the tastes of Teika in his later years. It was viewed as a sacred scripture in the altar from the Middle Ages and many commentary books were created. It also became a "song karuta" during the Edo period, and became widely popular among the common people.
