Traditionally, industrial organization theory has taken the view that a company's market behavior and the efficiency it achieves in the market, that is, market outcomes, depend on the environment that the company faces. Of the market environments referred to here, it is common to combine several economically important factors and explain them under the concept of market structure. The following factors in particular are emphasized as factors of market structure. First, there is market concentration, which indicates the degree of concentration of production, sales, shipments, etc. in the market. The level of market concentration is often regarded as an indicator of the extent to which companies behave with mutual awareness in the market and how easy it is for them to act cooperatively.
