This is the Japanese name for a type of retailing that spread rapidly in America after World War II. In America, they are called discount houses (different from bill discounters in London). They appeared after the enforcement of the Fair Trade Act in the 1930s, but did not develop systematically until after the war. This retailing method offered a wide variety of national brand products (see the entry on brands) ranging from durable consumer goods such as electrical appliances, furniture, cameras, and watches to general consumer goods such as clothing, at prices far lower than the manufacturer's desired selling price by setting up simple stores in less favorable locations and adopting a mass sales method that not only provided self-service but also sold products without clothing.
