Japanese: デスマン - ですまん（英語表記）desman

A general term for two species of mammals in the family Talidae of the order Insectivores. Aquatic moles that live in Europe. They resemble terrestrial moles, but have relatively long limbs and large, well-developed webbed hind feet. The webbed front feet are small. Their tails are long and have scent glands at their base that emit a musky odor. Their long, tube-like noses can be bent in all directions and act as a snorkel while swimming, and the nostrils at the tip close underwater. Their eyes are very small and they have no ears. They dig long tunnels into the riverbank to make their nests, and swim underwater to scavenge for food with their noses.

食虫目モグラ科のうち2種の哺乳類の総称。ヨーロッパにすむ水生のモグラ類。陸生のモグラに似るが，四肢は比較的長く，大きく発達した後足に水かきがある。前足の水かきは小さい。尾は長く，基部に麝香（じやこう）臭を発する臭腺がある。長くチューブ状にのびる鼻はあらゆる方向に曲げることができ，遊泳中にはスノーケルとして働き，先端につく鼻孔は水中では閉じる。目はごく小さく，耳介はない。川岸に長いトンネルを掘って巣とし，水中を泳いで鼻で食物をあさる。
