A seaweed of the red algae Corallinaceae family that grows covering rocks in the bathyal zone along the coast (illustration). It is a calcareous alga that deposits large amounts of calcium carbonate, and its body is as hard as stone. The body branches out repeatedly in a regular fork shape, giving it an overall fan-like shape. There is no distinction between the main axis and the branches, and it is flat with nodes at regular intervals. The body is about 2 mm wide and over 10 cm tall. The body has a front and back, and spores are produced on the back side. It is known to be distributed in Korea, the waters off Japan, Africa, and Australia. Along the Japanese coast, it grows south of the Kanto region, and can also be found on the side walls of slightly deeper tide pools. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
