Atomi Girls' School

…She was from Osaka, and her real name was Takino. She moved to Tokyo in the early Meiji period, and in 1875, she founded Atsumi Girls' School in Kanda Sarugaku-cho. Atsumi Girls' School taught Japanese language, Chinese classics, calligraphy, sewing, flower arranging, tea ceremony, painting, and arithmetic to girls from middle-class and above families, with particular emphasis on waka poetry, painting, and calligraphy. She devoted herself to cultivating traditional Japanese feminine virtues, and had a major influence on later girls' secondary education in Japan. …
