Sword Scroll - Tsurugi no Maki

Japanese: 剣の巻 - つるぎのまき

The title of a Heike song. One of the three Daihiji songs. The Kusanagi sword is a treasured sword that has been passed down to the Imperial family since the Age of the Gods. When Susanoo-no-Mikoto descended to Izumo and went upstream of the Hi River, he found an old couple crying. When he asked them why, they told him that their daughter was about to be swallowed by a giant snake with eight heads and tails (Chuon). Feeling pity for them, Susanoo devised a plan to get the snake drunk and kill it. When he did so, the sword that came out of the snake's tail was the Murakumo-no-Tsurugi, which he presented to Amaterasu Omikami, but later, when the heavenly grandson descended to this country, it was given to her along with a treasured mirror (Chuon).

平曲の曲名。大秘事3曲の一つ。神代より皇室に伝わる宝剣に草薙剣（くさなぎのつるぎ）がある。素戔嗚（すさのお）尊が出雲に下り，簸（ひ）の川上に赴いたときに，泣いている老夫婦がいたのでわけを尋ねると，頭も尾も八つある大蛇に娘がのまれそうなのだという(〈中音（ちゆうおん）〉)。尊は哀れに思い，策を巡らして大蛇を酒に酔わせて退治した。そのとき，尾から出たのが叢雲剣（むらくものつるぎ）で，それを天照大神に奉ったが，のちに天孫がこの国に下ったときに，宝鏡に添えて渡された(〈中音〉)。
