Marburg an der Lahn

A university town in the state of Hesse in central Germany. Population 77,400 (2000). The old town is located on the right bank of the Lahn River, on the slopes of Schlossberg Hill, with the Hesse Duke's castle (built around 1122) at the top. The medieval streetscape is well preserved, with many narrow alleys and stone steps. The University of Marburg, which inherits the tradition of being the oldest Protestant university in Germany (founded in 1527), is scattered throughout the city, and has campuses for the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Medicine on the left bank (east bank) of the Lahn River. St. Elisabeth Church (built in the 13th century) in the northern part of the old town is Germany's oldest Gothic church. Industries include pharmaceuticals, electrical equipment, iron processing, and printing.

ドイツ中部、ヘッセン州の大学都市。人口7万7400（2000）。旧市街はラーン川右岸、頂上にヘッセン侯の城館（1122ころ建築）のあるシュロスベルク丘陵斜面にある。中世の町並みをよく残し、狭い路地や石段が多い。ドイツ最古のプロテスタント系大学（1527創立）の伝統を引き継ぐマールブルク大学は、市内各所に分散しているほか、ラーン川左岸（東岸）に理学部、医学部のキャンパスを構えている。旧市街の北部にある聖エリザベス教会（13世紀建立）は、ドイツ最古のゴシック様式教会堂である。工業は、薬品、電気機器、鉄材加工、印刷などがある。
