Moebi (shrimp) - Metapenaeus moyebi

Japanese: モエビ(藻蝦) - モエビ(英語表記)Metapenaeus moyebi
Moebi (shrimp) - Metapenaeus moyebi
A decapod crustacean of the family Penaeidae (illustration). This edible shrimp is named after the eelgrass zone that inhabits sandy and muddy bottoms at depths of around 20m in inland bays and seas. It is distributed from Japan to the Indian Ocean, and is abundant in Mikawa Bay, Ise Bay, the Seto Inland Sea, the Ariake Sea, and the Yatsushiro Sea in Japan. It is caught along with other shrimp species in casting nets, waiting nets, drift nets, and shrimp-throwing nets. It was once common in Tokyo Bay, but has become very rare in recent years. The fishing season is from June to September. It reaches a body length of 13cm, with females being larger. When alive, it is pale blue-green or pale yellowish brown, with green tips on the tails.
