Fumiko Kaneko

Japanese: 金子文子 - かねこふみこ
Fumiko Kaneko

Social activist. Born in Yokohama to parents Saeki Bun'ichi from Hiroshima Prefecture and Kaneko Kikuno from Yamanashi Prefecture, she was registered as her grandfather's child and spent a miserable childhood. She moved to Tokyo and worked as a newspaper girl and maid, but met Paku Ryol (1902-1974), who had come to Japan and organized the "Futeisha" association for the Korean independence movement. They hit it off and began living together. In September 1923 (Taisho 12), the Great Kanto Earthquake occurred, and both were arrested and charged with high treason, with plotting to assassinate the emperor or crown prince. They were sentenced to death in March 1926, but both were commuted to life imprisonment. On July 23, Fumiko hanged herself in Tochigi Prison.
