Entertainer and politician. Born in Hiroshima Prefecture. He moved to Tokyo to become an enka singer, and after studying hard, graduated from Hosei University in 1927 (Showa 2). In 1932, he joined Yoshimoto Kogyo, making a name for himself as an "intellectual current affairs song singer" and performing on stage with his "carefree style" that satirized the social climate, while also appearing in films. From 1946 (Showa 21), he was elected to the House of Representatives four times, and was active as a Democratic Party representative, becoming a pioneer of what would later be called "celebrity politicians." He is the author of "Carefree Philosophy" (1946). [Soya Mukai] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
