Around 1478 - 1553 Italian physician of the Renaissance. He studied literature, philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, and medicine in Padua. He valued experience and sought the autonomous principles of nature. For example, he is notable for classifying infectious diseases according to the method of infection ((1) contact, (2) nearby objects such as clothing, and (3) distant objects such as seeds), and for rejecting astrological interpretations. He is particularly famous for his treatise on syphilis, and the disease that was rampant at the time is still called syphilis today, a reference to his work Syphilis, or the French Disease (1531), which was named after a beautiful Greek boy.
