Money cowry

Japanese: キイロダカラガイ - きいろだからがい（英語表記）money cowry

A gastropod shell of the cowrie family. The shell of an adult is yellow, but the back of an immature individual is white with blue-black horizontal stripes, resembling a kendo mask, hence the nickname Menga Tadakaragai. This pattern also became the pictograph for the character for treasure. The shell is about 3 cm high, 2.2 cm wide from side to side, and 1.5 cm wide dorsally and ventrally. When young, the shell is thin and small like an ordinary gastropod shell, but has a rolled layer. As it matures, the outer edge of the wide opening thickens and curves inward, the opening becomes narrow and elongated, and many teeth appear on the inner and outer edges.

タカラガイ科の巻貝。成貝の殻は黄色であるが，十分成育していない個体の背面は白色で青黒色の横縞の斑があり，剣道の面のように見えるのでメンガタダカラガイの別名がある。この模様はまた宝（たから）の字の象形文字となった。殻の高さ3cm，左右の幅2.2cm，背腹の幅1.5cmくらいになる。殻は幼貝では薄くふつうの巻貝のように小さいが巻いた層がある。成育すると広い殻口の外側の縁が厚くなって内方へ曲がり，殻口は狭く細長くなり，内外の縁に多くの歯ができる。
