The roots of the nth degree algebraic equation a ₀ x ⁿ + a ₁ x ⁿ ^-1 + ... + _a n _-1 x + a _n = 0, with the rational numbers a ₀ , a ₁ , ..., a _n as coefficients, are called algebraic numbers. All algebraic numbers are real or complex numbers, but some real numbers are not algebraic (transcendental numbers). Many algebraic numbers can be expressed as numbers with infinite roots, but there are also algebraic numbers that cannot be expressed using radical roots. This is because algebraic equations of degree 5 or higher generally cannot be solved by algebraic methods, that is, using radical roots. All numbers that can be constructed are algebraic numbers and can be expressed as numbers with infinite roots that only have square roots.

有理数 a₀，a₁，…，a_n を係数とする n 次の代数方程式 a₀xⁿ＋a₁xⁿ^-1＋…＋a_n_-1x＋a_n＝0 の根を代数的数という。代数的数はすべて，実数または複素数であるが，実数のなかには代数的でないもの (超越数) も存在する。また多くの代数的数は，不尽根数として表わされるが，累乗根を用いて表わすことのできない代数的数も存在する。それは，5次以上の代数方程式は，一般に代数的解法によって，すなわち累乗根を用いては解けないからである。また作図可能な数はすべて代数的数であって，平方根だけを含む不尽根数として表わすことができる。
