...Although stylistic changes occurred, from Classicism to Neo-Baroque to Realism, the most popular themes throughout the 19th century were monuments, portraits, and tombstones, as seen in works such as Johann Heinrich von Dannecker's (1758-1841) Bust of Schiller (1805-10), Gottfried Schadow's (1764-1850) Tombstone of Margrave Mark (1788-91), Christian Rauch's (1777-1857) Friedrich the Great (1839-51), and Beethoven's (1899-1903) portrait by Klinger, who was also known as a painter. In the mid-19th century, after the emergence of Reinhold Begas (1831-1911), who was influenced by the works of Michelangelo and Bernini, Hildebrand again established a strict classicist style, exerting a lasting influence on later generations, especially in Munich.
