〘Noun〙 A stew of red beans or beans and vegetables. Widely enjoyed throughout the country, it is eaten on New Year's Day, the eighth day of the lunar calendar, Bon Festival, festivals, harvest festivals, etc. It originated from collecting and simmering offerings to the gods, and is the same custom as zoni. 〘名〙小豆または豆と野菜の寄せ煮料理。全国に広く行なわれ、正月、事八日、盆、祭礼、収穫祭などに食べる。神饌(しんせん)を集めて煮ることに始まり、雑煮と同じ風習。従兄弟汁。〔伊京集（室町）〕※滑稽本・浮世風呂（1809‐13）三「お琴といふものはネ。笊をつるしてお琴煮。ヲヤ、おことぢゃアねへ従弟煮(イトコニ)を」[補注]語源としては、煮えにくいものから「追い追い」入れて煮るところから、「甥甥(おいおい)」にかけて名付けたなどの説もあるが、野菜ばかりを煮るところから、近親関係のいとこにかけてしゃれたものか。
