〘Noun〙 A stew of red beans or beans and vegetables. Widely enjoyed throughout the country, it is eaten on New Year's Day, the eighth day of the lunar calendar, Bon Festival, festivals, harvest festivals, etc. It originated from collecting and simmering offerings to the gods, and is the same custom as zoni. Cousin soup. [Ikyoshu (Muromachi)] *Humorous book, Ukiyoburo (1809-13), volume 3 "There is something called an okoto. Hang up a colander and simmer the okoto. Oya, okoto is a nee he itokoni (cousin soup) ." [Additional note] One theory about the origin of the name is that it is named after "oioi" (nephew and nephew) , which refers to the fact that ingredients that are difficult to boil are added "oioi" to simmer, but it could also be a pun on the fact that only vegetables are boiled, referring to cousins who are closely related.
