Körner, Theodor
Born: April 24, 1873, Komárno, Hungary
[died] January 4, 1957. Vienna, Austria. Austrian army officer and politician. President of the Second Republic of Austria (in office 1951-57). Served as a colonel in the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I. In 1915 he became chief of staff and fought against an Italian attack. After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in November 1918, he was appointed inspector general of the army of the new First Republic of Austria, but retired two years later. He joined the Austrian Social Democratic Party and served as a member of the Austrian Bundestag (upper house) representing Vienna from 1925 to 1934. In the early 1930s, as Austrian politics increasingly shifted to the right, Kellner was a military adviser to the Social Democratic armed self-defense organization, the Schutzbund (Republican Defence League), and consistently opposed violent acts. However, when the Christian Social Party came to power in February 1934, he was imprisoned for his activities. After the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany in March 1938, he refused to be associated with the Nazi regime. After the end of World War II, he was appointed mayor of Vienna by the Soviet occupation authorities. In May 1951, he was elected president of the Second Austrian Republic, but died in office.
