A bird of the family Scolopacidae (illustration). Approximately 60 cm long. A large snipe with a long, curved beak. It breeds in northern Eurasia from Britain and Europe to southern Siberia, and in winter migrates to southern Europe, Africa, India, Southeast Asia, and the Greater Sunda Islands. It migrates to Japan as a migratory or winter bird. The upper part of the body is light gray-brown with black vertical stripes, the rump is white, and the tail is also white with horizontal stripes. The underside is white with black-brown vertical stripes on the neck, and a line of black spots from the chest to the sides.

チドリ目シギ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約60cm。下に大きく湾曲した長いくちばしをもつ大型のシギ。イギリス，ヨーロッパからシベリア南部にかけてのユーラシア大陸北部で繁殖し，冬はヨーロッパ南部，アフリカ，インド，東南アジア，大スンダ列島などに渡る。日本には旅鳥または冬鳥として渡来する。体の上面は淡灰褐色で黒い縦斑があり，腰は白く，尾も白くて横斑がある。下面は白くてくびには黒褐色の縦斑があり，胸からわきには黒い斑点が線状に並んでいる。
