Yoshihide Asahina

Japanese:
Yoshihide Asahina
[Born] Angen 2 (1176)?
[Died] Kenpo 1 (1213)?
A samurai in the early Kamakura period. The third son of Wada Yoshimori, he was called Saburo. He was known among the retainers of the Kamakura shogunate for his outstanding bravery. In 1200, when Shogun Minamoto no Yoriie was sightseeing at the seaside, he was ordered to demonstrate his swimming skills, and he is said to have dived deep underwater and caught a shark, which amazed the people. In May 13, when his father Yoshimori fought against Hojo Yoshitoki in Kamakura (→Wada War), he fought bravely as a brave warrior on the Wada side, attacking the Shogun's residence from the front and killing many samurai. It is said that the enemy soldiers avoided Yoshihide's path. After the Wada side was defeated, Yoshihide fled by sea to Awa Province, but was apparently killed in battle shortly thereafter. The Genpei Jōsuiki tells us that Yoshihide was born when Wada Yoshimori married Tomoe (→ Tomoe Gozen), who was a concubine of Kiso Yoshinaka. However, the Azuma Kagami states that Yoshihide was 38 years old in the first year of the Kenpō era, so this theory does not hold up.
