...Finland folklorist. Lecturer at the University of Helsinki. He was appointed professor only in his later years, and under less favorable research conditions, he left a lasting legacy despite his deteriorating health. He was not an original theorist, but simply explained K. Krohn's theory in a modest, yet clear, logical and careful manner, but this made him a model for researchers who use the "historical and geographical method." He is more highly regarded abroad than in Japan for completing the international classification criteria for "folktale types," which are indispensable in the history of folktale research, and for promoting the creation of an effective environment through international cooperation between scholars who are particularly important in research.
