Seki [city] - Seki

Japanese: 関[市] - せき
Seki [city] - Seki
A city in the southern part of Gifu Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1950. It lies in the basin of the Nagara River and its tributaries, the Tsubo River, the midstream of the Mugi River, and the midstream and upper reaches of the Itadori River. The Nagara River Railway and the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway pass through the city. Seki, the city center, is known as a place where Japanese swords are forged, known as Seki Kaji, and until the mid-Edo period, it produced master craftsmen such as Seki Magoroku (Kanemoto), Izuminokami Kanesada, and Shizu Saburo. After that, it manufactured hoes and sickles, and from the mid-Meiji period, it developed into a metal industry producing pocket knives, replacement blades for safety razors, scissors, and Western tableware. After World War II, Western tableware became the mainstream, and exports are also thriving. The metal industry accounts for 30% of the city's manufactured goods shipment value (2003), but in the 1980s, industrial parks were developed, and general machinery and automobile parts manufacturing industries have also grown. There are Shin-Hasedera Temple (Yoshida Kannon), Zenkoji Temple, and the ruins of Mirokuji Temple (historic site). In February 2005, the towns of Mugegawa, Mugegawa, Horado, Itadori, and Kaminoho in Muge County were incorporated. Area: 472.33 km2 . Population: 91,418 (2010).
