This is the general name for a large group of shell mounds from the early Jomon to Yayoi periods that spread across the Satohama area of Miyatojima, Naruse Town, Monou District, Miyagi Prefecture. They are also called Satohama Shell Mounds. They measure 600m east to west and 800m north to south, and depending on their location, they are sometimes named after the hamlet names of their villages, such as Terashita-goi, Dai-goi, Nashiki-goi, and Sodekuboko. They were introduced to the academic world during the Meiji period, but became famous during excavations in the Taisho period, when stratigraphic and typological studies were conducted and a large number of human bones were discovered. Since then, they have been investigated by many researchers and research institutions. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
