1656‐? A scientist from the early Qing Dynasty in China. A native of Jiangsu. He designed and built many ritual objects and machines. His meteorological devices include a type of thermometer (a device for testing heat and cold) for measuring air temperature and testing the properties of medicines, and a type of hygrometer (a device for testing dryness and humidity) for predicting rain and shine. The latter uses the fact that the string of a string expands and contracts with changes in humidity, and is based on the same principle as the later hair hygrometer. Wang Chong of the Later Han Dynasty had already noticed that the strings of the koto loosen when it rains, and his hygrometer was based on this discovery. 1656‐?
