A scholar of Japanese classics in the late Edo period. Born on February 25, 1770. The fourth son of Yamagishi Koretomo, a samurai of the Obama domain in Wakasa Province (Fukui Prefecture). At the age of 14, he was adopted by Ban Nobumasa, a samurai of the same domain, and moved to Edo the following year in 1787. He was nicknamed Shugoro and called himself Kotohi. He became a disciple of Motoori Norinaga after his death. He left outstanding achievements in the study of Japanese history, including Nagara no Yamakaze, a study of the Jinshin War; Chugai Keijiden, a study of diplomatic history; Jinmyocho Kosho, a study of shrines listed in the Shikinai and Shikinai, and the essay Hikobae (1847, 1861). He was close to Hirata Atsutane, but their relationship began to diverge around 1823. His manuscripts are held in the Imperial Household Agency Archives and Mausolea Department, the National Diet Library, the Seikado Library, and the Toyo Bunko Library, while his books are held in Kyoto University and Obama City Library. He died in Kyoto on October 14, 1240, at the age of 74. His grave is still in Hosshinji Temple in Fushiwara, Obama City, Fukui Prefecture.
