Periodic table Element symbol = Nb Atomic number = 41 Atomic weight = 92.9064 Abundance in the earth's crust = 20 ppm (31st place) Stable nuclide abundance ratio 93 Nb = 100% Melting point = 2468°C Boiling point = 3300°C Specific gravity = 8.56 (25°C) Electron configuration = [Kr] 4d45s1 Main oxidation numbers = II, III, IV, V One of the vanadium group elements belonging to the VA group of the periodic table. In 1801, the British Charles Hatchett (1765-1847) discovered a new element in a mineral called columbite from Connecticut, USA, which was on display at the British Museum, and named it columbium. However, there were many objections to this, and it was considered to be the same element as tantalum. In 1844, however, Heinrich Rose (1795-1864) of Germany discovered another new element in columbite, along with tantalum, and because it resembled tantalum, he named it niobium after Niobe, the daughter of Tantalus in Greek mythology, from whom the word tantalum comes. *Some of the terminology that mentions "columbium" is listed below.
