〘Noun〙① A platform on which to place things. ※Sekkyo-setsu, Sekkyo Karigane (1631), Vol. 2 "It is as if the statue had been placed in the same style." ※Ukiyo-zoshi, Honcho Sakurakage Higoto (1689), Vol. 1 "When the pedestal was rearranged and the emperor looked at it, there was a piece of paper."② A platform on which to place a Buddha statue. Depending on the shape, there are "lotus seats" modeled after lotus flowers, "Sumishan seats" modeled after Mount Sumeru , "rock seats" modeled after rocks, and "choju-za" modeled after birds and animals. It is also called "lion seats" because Buddha is said to be a lion among people. ※Haiku poem, Kebuki-sou (1638), 6: “Is the world a pedestal for the snow Buddha of Fuji (Masayoshi) ?” ③ (meaning a platform on which the torso is placed) Refers to the buttocks. ※Kabuki play, Yojiko Takiuchi (1753), 6: “From the head to the brain , it is a bamboo splitter.” ④ (meaning a platform on which the neck is placed) Refers to the torso.

〘名〙① 物をその上にのせておく台。※説経節・説経苅萱(1631)下「このよにたてたるそとはは、おなじたいさになをったるがごとくなり」※浮世草子・本朝桜陰比事(1689)一「台座(タイザ)を改めさせ御覧ありしに、一つの折紙あって」② 仏像を安置しておく台。その形によって、蓮華をかたどった「蓮華座」、須彌山(しゅみせん)をかたどった「須彌座」、岩をかたどった「岩座」、鳥獣をかたどった「鳥獣座」などがある。また、仏を人中の獅子と称するところから、「獅子の座」ともいう。※俳諧・毛吹草(1638)六「世界をば台座(ダイザ)か富士の雪仏〈昌意〉」③ (胴体をのせておく台の意) 尻をいう。※歌舞伎・幼稚子敵討(1753)六「脳頭(のうとう)からだいざ迄、唐竹割じゃ」④ (首をのせておく台の意) 胴体をいう。
