This refers to the momentum for reform that was widespread in the United States from the early 20th century to World War I in domestic politics as well as in various areas of society and culture. It can also be translated as "progressiveism." As early as the second half of the 19th century, farmers and workers in some areas had expressed dissatisfaction with the distortions of the monopoly industrial society and the accompanying political corruption, but during this period of progressivism, calls for reform grew from a wider range of people in more classes and occupations, including the urban middle class and general consumers.
