1763‐1845 French politician and philosopher. Born in Champagne to a Jansenist family. Became a lawyer in Paris (1783), and was appointed secretary of the Paris Commune at the outbreak of the French Revolution. Elected to the Five Hundred under the Directory, he was revoked due to the Fructidor coup. During the First Empire, he became professor of philosophy at the Sorbonne (1811-14), and through his studies of Descartes and others, he opposed Condillac's sensualism. In 1815, he became a member of the House of Representatives, and, together with Guizot and others, was active as a theoretical representative of the Doctrinaires. At the end of the Restoration, he served as Speaker of the House of Representatives, and protested against the reactionary policies of Charles X.
