Kabuki script. Historical piece. Four acts. Written by Kawatake Mokuami. First performed at the Tokyo Murayama Theater in 1873 ( 6th year of the Meiji era ). The story of Sakai's drum, which is from "Go-Fudoki," is dramatized by weaving in the discord between Tokugawa's vassals and the Battle of Mikatagahara. The scene at the drum tower inside Hamamatsu Castle is one of the 18 major new kabuki plays, and was a hit for Ichikawa Danjūrō IX.
