...Governments around the world, seeing the military mobility of aircraft, adopted active policies to protect and nurture civil aviation as well. By the time of World War II, many airlines had merged to become their respective countries' flag carriers (also called national carriers) and operated international routes. These included Lufthansa of Germany, Air France of France, Imperial of the UK, KLM of the Netherlands, and Alarittoria of Italy.
