The most important lead ore. It occurs in various hydrothermal deposits, contact metasomatic deposits (skarn deposits), kuroko deposits, and certain copper-bearing iron sulfide deposits, and often coexists with sphalerite to form lead-zinc ores. Its idiomorphic shape is cubic or solid, or aggregates or clumps of these, and occasionally hexagonal plates. It can also become a silver ore due to the presence of a small amount of silver. In Japan, it is found in many places, including the Tara Mine (closed) in Fujisato-cho, Akita Prefecture, the Chichibu Mine in Saitama Prefecture, the Kamioka Mine (closed) in Gifu Prefecture, and the Toyoha Mine in Hokkaido (closed). Although there are few examples in Japan, in tropical regions it is easily decomposed by oxidation and transformed into secondary minerals, mainly composed of lead, such as sulphurite and cerussite. Its English name is a direct transfer of the Latin word for lead ore.
