British novelist and politician. His original surname was Bulwer, but he added the family name Lytton after inheriting his mother's fortune. He was called Lord Lytton because he was created a peer (baron) as a politician. He was from an upper-class background, and after graduating from Cambridge University he frequented high society, eventually making a spectacular debut as a politician and novelist. He produced many diverse works, including high society novels, political novels, crime novels, horror novels, and futuristic novels, and although they lacked depth or artistic quality, they skillfully captured the tastes and trends of the times and were well received by a wide readership.

イギリスの小説家，政治家。本来の姓はブルワーであったが，母方の財産を継いでその家名リットンを加えた。またリットン卿と呼ばれるのは，政治家として貴族(男爵)に列せられたためである。上流の出身で，ケンブリッジ大学卒業後社交界に出入りし，やがて政治家，小説家として華やかにデビューした。作品は多く，社交界小説，政治小説，犯罪小説，怪奇小説，未来小説など多様であり，深さや芸術性には欠けるものの，時代の好みや風潮を巧みにとらえて広い読者に迎えられた。
