Basket lacquerware

A type of lacquer decoration technique. It is also called kagoji. A vessel made by weaving bamboo trunks that have been thinly split after the bark has been removed or vines, called a basket wreath, is painted with lacquer. Some special vessels are made by rolling up bamboo strips of a certain width or stacking them in concentric circles. Its history is long, and the lacquered painted box with a portrait of a person excavated from the Saikyo Tomb of the Lelang Burial Mounds near Pyongyang on the Korean Peninsula dates back to the Later Han Dynasty (1st to 3rd century) and was made from thinly split bamboo. In Japan, artifacts excavated from the Korekawa and Kamegaoka ruins from the late Jomon period include baskets made of woven bamboo strips, as well as vines of Akebia and Mafuji. There is a theory that the lacquered kohei (Japanese lacquered urn) in the Shosoin Repository is made from a rolled up or stacked wreath. It was popular in Thailand and Burma (now Myanmar) as kimma sauce, but was introduced to Japan in the early modern period and was especially favored by tea masters, and used in tea utensils. In the late Edo period, Tamakaji Zokoku of the Takamatsu domain was influenced by it and left behind many masterpieces, and the technique is still passed down to the present day as Takamatsu lacquerware. Since the Meiji period, it has been produced in Kurume and other places such as Beppu, which imitated it.

漆加飾技法の一種。籠地(かごじ)ともいう。表皮をとってから薄く裂いた竹幹や、つる植物などを編んでつくった器形を籃胎というが、それに漆を塗ったもの。特殊なものに一定幅の竹ひごを巻き上げたり、同心円状に輪(わ)積みしたものもある。その歴史は古く、朝鮮半島の平壌近郊、楽浪古墳群の彩篋(さいきょう)塚出土の人物画像漆彩篋はメダケを細く割ってつくった後漢(ごかん)(1~3世紀)時代のものである。日本の縄文晩期の是川(これかわ)遺跡や亀ヶ岡遺跡からの出土品には、竹ひごを編んだ籠地のほか、アケビやマフジのつるを用いたものもある。正倉院の漆胡瓶(ぬりのこへい)は巻き上げか輪積みの胎地という説がある。タイやビルマ(現ミャンマー)で蒟醤(きんま)として盛行したが、それが近世に渡来して、とくに茶人に好まれ、茶道具に使用された。江戸末期、高松藩の玉楮象谷(たまかじぞうこく)はその影響を受けて数々の名品を残し、高松塗として現在にその技術を継承している。明治以降、久留米(くるめ)をはじめ、それを模倣した別府などでも生産している。
