A type of waltz, it is dance music or a dance set to that music that was popular in Europe, mainly in Vienna, in the 19th century. It is written in 3/4 or 3/8 time. It differs from a regular waltz in that the tempo is nearly twice as fast, the conductor counts each measure with one stroke, and the second beat is shortened and slightly shifted to the first beat. From the end of the 18th century, the waltz, which was based on the so-called German dance and began to be danced at courts all over Europe, developed in a unique way in Vienna's high society.
