Kalmar War

…His father fought against Sigismund III, King of Sweden and Poland (Adolf's cousin), drove him out of Sweden, became regent (1599), and then king (1604-11). After his death, Adolf, who was not yet 17 years old, inherited the Swedish throne, as well as conflicts and feuds with Denmark, Russia, and Poland. Sweden was at a disadvantage in the Kalmar War (1611-13) with Denmark, and with the help of King James I of England, Sweden concluded the Peace of Knäred, but the country was forced to pay heavy indemnities. Sweden was at a disadvantage in the war against Russia, and the Peace of Stolbova (1617) gave Sweden Karelia and Ingermanland, and Russia renounced its claims to Estonia and Livonia, thus excluding Russia from the Baltic Sea until the time of Peter the Great. …
