A religious revival that spread through the American colonies in the mid-18th century. It raised the religious consciousness of the inhabitants, brought about changes in church doctrines and institutions, and had a major social and political impact. The religious revival began in New England under the influence of J. Edwards, and in the Middle Colonies it occurred between Dutch Reformed and Scottish Presbyterians. In 1739, the English preacher G. Whitefield visited the area and began an itinerant mission, which promoted cooperation among the various regions. In the South, the movement spread among Presbyterians and Baptists from the 1750s. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
