Great Awakening

Japanese: 大覚醒 - だいかくせい（英語表記）Great Awakening

A religious revival that spread through the American colonies in the mid-18th century. It raised the religious consciousness of the inhabitants, brought about changes in church doctrines and institutions, and had a major social and political impact. The religious revival began in New England under the influence of J. Edwards, and in the Middle Colonies it occurred between Dutch Reformed and Scottish Presbyterians. In 1739, the English preacher G. Whitefield visited the area and began an itinerant mission, which promoted cooperation among the various regions. In the South, the movement spread among Presbyterians and Baptists from the 1750s.

18世紀中ごろアメリカ植民地に広まった信仰復興運動。住民の宗教的自覚を高め，教会の教義や制度に変革をもたらし，社会的･政治的影響も大きかった。信仰復興はニューイングランドではJ.エドワーズの影響で始まり，中部植民地ではオランダ改革派とスコットランド系長老派の間におこったが，1739年イギリスの説教者G.ホイットフィールドが訪れ巡回伝道を開始すると，各地の連携がすすめられた。南部でも50年代から長老派やバプティストの間で運動が広まった。
