Year of death: October 5, 1880 Year of birth: Kansei 11 (1799) A Japanese scholar of the late Edo period and early Meiji period. His first name was Atsumi. He was commonly known as Uchinosuke and later Osumi. He was the son of Midorikawa, a samurai of the Shintani Domain (Ehime Prefecture). In 1822, he became a disciple of Hirata Atsutane. Because he was honest and hardworking, he was adopted by Atsutane in the same year and married his eldest daughter, Chie. Although he did not have any notable academic achievements, he was in charge of practical matters such as raising funds for publishing and selling his father-in-law Atsutane's books. After Atsutane was transferred to Akita due to an offense against the shogunate's name, he ably led over 1,000 students. After the Meiji Restoration, he served as a judge of the Shinto Bureau, a judge of the Domestic Bureau, a lecturer to the Meiji Emperor, and a doctorate at the University, before being appointed Daikyosei (the highest teaching position) in 1879.
