Schiele - Egon Schiele

Austrian painter and draftsman. Born in Tulln on June 12th. Studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts from 1906 to 1909, and was later acquainted with and influenced by Klimt. In 1909, he formed the "New Art Group" with some younger colleagues. He mainly painted the pathological carnality of the human body, both male and female, with neurotic, hard lines and strong accents of color. His bold eroticism was shocking, and he was imprisoned in 1912 for it. In addition to dreamy landscapes, he also painted anxious mother-child images such as "Woman with Two Children" (1917, Austrian Picture Gallery, Vienna). He died young in Vienna on October 31st, 1918. He was forgotten for a time after his death, but in recent years his existential human figures have been reevaluated.

オーストリアの画家、素描家。6月12日トゥルンに生まれる。1906～09年ウィーン美術学校に学び、のちクリムトの知遇を得てその影響を受けた。09年若い同僚たちと「新芸術グループ」をつくった。彼は主として男女の人体の病的な肉感性を、神経過敏な硬質の描線と強烈な色彩のアクセントをつけて描いた。その大胆なエロティシズムは衝撃的で、そのため12年に拘禁されたことがある。夢幻的な風景のほか、『女と二人の子供』（1917・ウィーン、オーストリア絵画館）のような不安に満ちた母子像の作もある。18年10月31日ウィーンで夭折(ようせつ)。死後一時忘れられたが、近年彼の描く実存的な人間像が再評価されている。
