A river in northern France. It is 245 km long. It originates in the low hills near Saint-Quentin in the eastern part of Picardy, flows west-northwest, passes through Amiens and empties into the English Channel at the Bay of the Somme. It meanders between plateaus made of chalk limestone (white chalk), and the surrounding area is known as a major producer of wheat, barley, sugar beets, and other crops. With little change in annual flow rate and a gentle gradient, it is connected by many canals and is France's largest inland waterway.
