…The first pedal-powered bicycle was invented in 1939 by Kirkpatrick Macmillan of Scotland, but it was rear-wheel driven by a rod and crank. Around 1961, Pierre Michaux of France and others invented a pedal-powered bicycle in which the crank was fixed directly to the front wheel. This Michaux type was the first mass-produced bicycle to be put to practical use, and in England it was called the bone shaker, and it spread all over the world and became popular. …
