Solandra - Solandra

A general term for the genus Solandra in the Solanaceae family (APG classification: Solanaceae). It is a shrub or woody vine, with about 10 species distributed from Mexico to tropical America. The commonly cultivated trumpet banana S. grandiflora Sw. is native to Mexico and the West Indies, and can reach over 10 meters in its native habitat. In a greenhouse, it grows to 2-3 meters tall and blooms from winter to spring. The flowers are large, trumpet-shaped, over 20 centimeters long, fragrant, whitish-yellow at first, gradually turning yellowish-brown, and wilting in 4-5 days. The turmeric trumpet banana ( S. maxima PSGreen) is hairless on all plants, and the leaves are long-stalked, oval, and shiny. The flowers are large, trumpet-shaped, about 25 centimeters long, and have a sweet scent. The color of the flowers changes from yellow to yellowish-brown in a few days. In Okinawa Prefecture, it blooms in winter and overwinter at 8-10°C. It needs plenty of sunlight. From summer to autumn, the plant is almost dormant, so water sparingly. It is best propagated by cuttings.

ナス科（APG分類：ナス科）ソランドラ属の総称。低木または木性のつる植物で、メキシコから熱帯アメリカに約10種分布する。よく栽培されるラッパバナS. grandiflora Sw.はメキシコ、西インド諸島原産で、原産地では10メートル以上に達する。温室内では2～3メートル、冬から春に開花する。花は長さ20センチメートル以上のらっぱ状の大輪で、芳香があり、初めは白黄色でしだいに黄褐色に変わり、4、5日でしおれる。またウコンラッパバナ（マキシマ種）S. maxima P.S.Greenは全株に毛がなく、葉は柄が長く、卵形で光沢がある。花は長さ約25センチメートルのらっぱ状の大輪で、甘い香りがする。花の色は黄色から数日で黄褐色に変わる。沖縄県では冬咲きで、8～10℃で越冬する。日光によく当てる。夏から秋は休眠状態に近いので、灌水(かんすい)は控え目にする。繁殖は挿木がよい。
