The title of the Xiongnu ruler. It was monopolized by the ruling clan, the Renji, and the successor was decided by the will of the previous Chanyu, but was ultimately approved by a clan chiefs' meeting. It was later used by the Xianbei, Di, and Qiang nations, but after the Rouran in the 5th century, the rulers of the nomadic nations on the Mongolian Plateau came to be called Khagan (Khan). The Book of Han states that the meaning of Chanyu is "vast," but there are other theories and this is not the accepted theory.
