A town in Tagawa County in central-eastern Fukuoka Prefecture. It occupies the upper reaches of the Hikosan River, a tributary of the Onga River, and most of it is on the northern slope of Mount Hiko. The Hita-Hikosan Line runs through it. It developed as a coal mining town in the Chikuho coalfields from the mid-Meiji period onwards, but the mines were closed due to coal rationalization. It produces rice, shiitake mushrooms, wasabi, and other crops. The southern half of the town belongs to the Yaba-Hita-Hikosan Quasi-National Park. 132.20 km2 . Population: 10,909 (2010).
