A town in Tagawa County in central-eastern Fukuoka Prefecture. It occupies the upper reaches of the Hikosan River, a tributary of the Onga River, and most of it is on the northern slope of Mount Hiko. The Hita-Hikosan Line runs through it. It developed as a coal mining town in the Chikuho coalfields from the mid-Meiji period onwards, but the mines were closed due to coal rationalization. It produces rice, shiitake mushrooms, wasabi, and other crops. The southern half of the town belongs to the Yaba-Hita-Hikosan Quasi-National Park. 132.20 km2 . Population: 10,909 (2010). 福岡県中東部,田川郡の町。遠賀(おんが)川の支流彦山川最上流域を占め,大部分は英彦(ひこ)山の北斜面。日田彦山線が通じる。明治中期以降筑豊炭田の炭鉱町として発達したが,石炭合理化により炭坑は閉山。米,シイタケ,ワサビなどを産する。南半部は耶馬日田英彦山(やばひたひこさん)国定公園に属する。132.20km2。1万909人(2010)。
