Solarization - Solarization (English spelling)

This is one of the photosensitive phenomena of photographic film, and is also known as a technique of photographic expression. When film is exposed to light, the more exposed the film is, the darker the film will become as a result of development. However, if the film is exposed to more light than necessary (for example, more than 10,000 times), the blackness of that part will exceed the limit, and the blackness will decrease, resulting in an inversion effect. This phenomenon is called solarization.

On the other hand, if the film is stopped during normal development, exposed to diffused light, and then developed again, the final image will have a partial inversion effect. This effect is called the Sabatier effect after its discoverer, but since the image effect is similar to solarization, the photographic expression technique using the Sabatier effect is often called solarization photography. Masterpieces by photographers such as Man Ray are historically well known.

写真フィルムの感光現象の一つで、転じて写真表現の手法としても知られる。フィルムが光に当たると、その露光量が多いところほど現像によって黒さが強くなるのが通常であるが、必要以上（たとえば1万倍以上）に露光量が過大となると、その部分の黒さは限界を超え、逆に黒さが減少していく反転効果を呈するようになる。この現象をソラリゼーションとよぶ。

　一方、フィルムは通常の現像処理中にその現像をいったん中止し、拡散した光を当てたのちに現像を再開すると、その仕上がり画像は部分的な反転効果を呈する。この効果は発見した人の名をとってサバチエ効果というが、その画像効果がソラリゼーションに似ているところから、サバチエ効果による写真表現手法をソラリゼーション・フォトとよぶことが多い。写真家マン・レイらによる名作が歴史的に知られている。
