A city in central eastern Saitama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. It occupies an alluvial plateau between the Ayase River to the east and the Arakawa River to the west. The city center developed as a post town on the Nakasendo road, and Hirakata in the southwest was a wharf on the Arakawa River until the Meiji era. The Takasaki line runs through the city. Industries include auto parts, metals, general machinery, and electrical equipment. As the capital region expands, the area has become residential, and agriculture, which was centered on rice and wheat, has changed to a suburban type centered on fruit trees, vegetables, and greenhouse horticulture. 埼玉県中東部の市。1958年市制。東の綾瀬川,西の荒川の間の洪積台地を占める。中心市街は中山道の宿場町として発達,南西部の平方(ひらかた)は明治まで荒川の船着場であった。高崎線が通じる。自動車部品,金属,一般機器,電気機器などの工業が行われる。首都圏の拡大で住宅地化が進み,米麦中心であった農業は果樹,野菜,施設園芸を中心とした都市近郊型へ変わっている。45.51km2。22万3926人(2010)。
