Tanara is a general term for the people who live in the tropical rainforests along the coast of the eastern Democratic Republic of Madagascar in southeastern Africa. Tanara means "people of the forest." Representative tribes include the Betsimisaraka (population 800,000), Antaisaka (350,000), and Zafimaniry (20,000). The eastern coast where these tribes live is a steep slope where the high plateau drops abruptly into the sea, and there is almost no flat land.
